Recycling goes beyond just bottles and cardboard. In fact, the things you use on a daily basis can be given new life once their time is up. By knowing which appliances and objects can be rerouted from the landfill to the recycling depot, (or better yet upcycled!), we can all help contribute to a greener future.

Whether your old BBQ is taking up space or you’re just trading it in for a new model, there are eco-friendly ways of disposing of it. If it’s still in good shape, try selling or donating it first. If it’s no longer working, take it to our recycling centre. Not only is this the greener option, but it’s also the safest, especially since propane tanks need trained professionals to handle the hazardous materials.

Bike and Bike Gear

Extra bikes and the gear that go with them often gather dust in a garage or storage locker. If you’re getting rid of old bikes, there’s no need to leave them out on the curb. There are plenty of places and people who would happily take your wheels. Hold a garage sale, list them on community websites like Kijiji and Craigslist, or donate them to your local Salvation Army. If it’s beyond repair, you can often sell them for parts at a local bike store. For the rest of the materials, recycle them!

Curling Iron

Your curling iron will typically last one to two years. Similar hair appliances like blow dryers and flat irons have the same life span. While they can’t go into the blue bin, the scrap metal found in these beauty products can be recycled. Just take them our recycling depot, where the scrap metal can be melted down for reuse.

Aluminum Foil

Aluminum and steel are the most common metals that are thrown away every day in North America. While we can recycle used steel cans, did you know that we could also recycle aluminum foil too? These two metals are capable of being used over and over again without losing any of its strength or quality.

Hard Drive

Now that everything is up on the cloud, you might be getting rid of hard drives at home or in the office. When it’s time to destroy a hard drive and all of the information it carries, make sure you speak to professionals who specialize in this service. We offer hard drive shredding services to ensure the complete and total destruction of these devices, as well as the confidential information stored on them.

This week, we challenge you to take a few minutes and peruse what’s in your garage, storage, and garbage bin. Chances are, there are a lot of items that can be diverted from the landfill. If you have something to get rid of, first think about if others would want it. Recycling should be your second thought, and the garbage your very last option. As a one-stop shop for all your recycling needs, Happy Stan’s Recycling in Port Coquitlam can help guide you to a greener solution.

If you have questions about you can recycle, visit our website or tweet @happystans with your inquiries.
