April 22nd is Earth Day, a day that celebrates and encourages environmental protection around the world. First celebrated in 1970, this day is recognized in more than 192 countries each year. To honour Mother Earth, here are some simple tips to help you stay environmentally conscious all year long.
Shop Smart
Try to purchase second-hand items from consignment stores and garage sales. To avoid waste, buy what you need instead of what you want. Choose local and organic foods that are in season, and support local food producers. And when shopping, don’t forget to bring reusable shopping bags!
Simple Savers Around The House
Replace incandescent light bulbs with energy-wise LED bulbs. Use aerators on faucets and shower heads to use less water, and ensure that you weather strip your windows and doors to conserve energy.
Find Alternative Transportation
If you can, consider using a different modes of transport. Walking, cycling, carpooling, and public transportation are environmentally friendly ways of getting around. If you don’t drive a lot, consider forgoing your vehicle and joining a car-share program. When driving, reduce idling and maintain correct tire pressure to reduce emissions.
Don’t Discard
Recycle, donate and reuse items before throwing them into the trash. Don’t forget that harmful materials like batteries, chemicals and electronics should be taken to your local hazardous waste depot or recycler.
