A clean house can help clear your mind. If you’ve read Part 1 of our Sustainable Spring Cleaning series, then you already know of sustainable ways to clear the clutter. But don’t let that stop you from continuing to live green even after you’ve rid of extra ‘stuff’. Here are some simple steps to adopt eco-friendly habits at home!
Reduce your paper towel consumption. Take some of those ratty old t-shirts you’re getting rid of and turn them into rags for cleaning. If you don’t have any holey clothes in your closet, try using lonely socks. It’s a simple alternative that helps to save you money and conserve the environment.
Create homemade cleaning solutions. Many household products, like baking soda and vinegar, serve as strong cleaning agents. For an effective counter cleaner, mix ¼ cup baking soda and just enough liquid castile soap until it becomes a creamy consistency. When you clean your home regularly with eco-friendly, homemade products, you live in a home that not only smells fresh, but is also free of chemicals that are harmful to you and your family. You save money because you no longer have to buy cleaning supplies. Plus, you’re not making extra waste as you spruce up your home. What could be cleaner than that?
Sanitize sponges with salt. There’s no use cleaning anything with a sponge that’s filled with bacteria. Instead of throwing it out, sanitize it! Sud up your sponges, rinse them thoroughly, and then soak them in cold, heavily salted water for two hours. This will kill the germs, and get your sponges ready to clean.
Hang-dry your laundry. Drying your clothes in a dryer isn’t just hard on your clothes, it’s also hard on the environment. With Spring and Summer weather coming our way, stay green and install a clothesline in your backyard.
